for everyone
I took these pics during a trip to Kolar district, Karnataka. This was facilitated by S. Vishwanath, a water guru based in Bangalore. The primary purpose of the visit was to look into the Persian wheel system of agricultural irrigation which is still being practiced in these areas. Such zero energy (implying zero Green House Emission energy) irrigation systems are perhaps the most sustainable of all but are now falling out of grace as subsidised electricity has led to large scale groundwater extraction in these areas. This has lowered water availability for the Persian wheels from their dug wells. The location was mesmerising but a lot is left to think about and act upon before we lose such creative systems of water harvesting

Thanks Amitangshu. Some years back I had an opportunity to visit similar locations in the state while studying the issue of laterization of the soil as a consequence of deforestation.- Sudipto
